Passage One
No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the USA. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Famous dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, they are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed description of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.
Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational” which feature crime and gossip (闲谈), to the “serious”, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions, American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with the attraction of television.
Just as American newspapers satisfy all tastes, so do they also try to attract readers of all political parties. A few newspapers support extremist (极端主义的) groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers try to attract
middle-of-the-road Americans who are moderate. Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.
As in other countries, American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once courageously exposed political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair (水门事件). The Newspapers drew the attention of the public to the horrors of the Vietnam War.
21. There are fewer national newspapers in ______.
A. Britain than in the USA. B. France than in Britain
C. the USA than in Britain or France D. France than in the USA or Britain
22. Most American newspapers try hard to entertain their readers because ______.
A. they have to keep up a good relation with them
B. they have to compete with television
C. they have to write about crime and gossip
D. they have to give factual news in an interesting way
23. Many American newspapers attract readers of different political preference by ______.
A. supporting extremist groups from time to time
B. inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for them
C. avoiding carrying articles about extremists
D. printing articles representing different political viewpoints
24. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. the characteristics of American newspapers
B. the development of American newspapers
C. the functions of American newspapers
D. the advantages and disadvantages of American newspapers
25. Which of the following adjectives is similar to the word “
middle of-the-road”?
A. neutral B. anxious
C. merry D. aggressive
Passage Two
A scientist once said: “I have concluded that the earth is being visited by intelligently controlled vehicles from outer space.”
If we take this as a reasonable explanation for UFOs (unidentified flying objects), questions immediately come up. “Why don’t they get in touch with us, then? Why don’t they land right on the White House lawn and declare themselves?” people asked. In reply, scientists say that, while this may be what we want, it may not necessarily be what they want.
“The most likely explanation, it seems to me,” said Dr. Mead, “is that they are simply watching what we are up to---that responsible society outside our solar system is keeping an eye on us to see that we don’t set in motion a chain reaction that might have unexpected effects for outside our solar system.”
Opinions from other scientists might go like this: “Why should they want to get in touch with us? We may feel we’re more important than we really are! They may want to observe us only and not interfere with the development of our civilization. They may not care if we see them but they also may not care to say hello.”
Some scientists have also suggested that Earth is a kind of zoo or wildlife reserve. Just as we set aside wilderness areas and wildlife reserves to allow animals and growing things to develop naturally while we observe them, perhaps Earth was set aside ages ago for the same purpose.
Are we being observed by intelligent beings from other civilizations in the universe? Are they watching our progress in space travel? Do we live in a gigantic “zoo” observed by our “
keepers”, but having no communication with them?
Now we have to recognize that, among the stars in the heavens, there may very well be worlds inhabited by beings who arc to us as we arc to ants.
26. People who ask the question “Why don’t they get in touch with us... and declare themselves?” may have thought that ______.
A. there are no such things as UFOs
B. UFOs are visitors from solar system
C. there’s no reason for UFOs sooner or later
D. we are bound to see UFOs sooner or later
27. According to Dr. Mead, the attitude of beings from outer space toward us is one of ______.
A. unfriendliness B. suspicion
C. superiority D. hostility
28. In line 21, the word “keepers” refers to ______.
A. persons who look after animals in a gigantic zoo
B. astronauts travelling in the manned space ship
C. persons who are observing us
D. intelligent beings observing us from outer space
29. The writer thinks that ______.
A. in the heavens there may be other worlds inhabited by intelligent beings
B. human beings are as supreme as the intelligent beings in outer space
C. maybe human beings are not so supreme as the beings from other civilizations in the universe
D. the beings from other civilizations in the universe will come to meet us and say hello one day
